Comment on article 3 : Nature Study!!!!!!!! It's real wonderful workshop.

On last weekend 24th August 2008, I was join one of the program call ‘Water4life’ organized by GEC or Global Environmental Centre. GEC initiated most of the environmental issue within this country and they are one of NGO work on environment issues since year 1998.The project aims to:

  • Improve the water quality from Class IV-V to III-IV and enhance the aesthetic value of the river
  • Increase awareness & inculcate the ownership among communities to help reduce pollution
  • Develop a community participation model elsewhere in Malaysia for large scale implementation

My attending in this programmed is unplanned since I have to be represented my company and I found this is a good programmed to our community. They expected about 60 participants from selected Rukun Tetanggas (RTs) and Residence Associations (RAs) under the Sg. Pencahala and Sg. Way will take part in the training. Unfortunately less than 10 participants are attending this workshop. Here are some reasons in my personal view why the participant is less:

  • Lack of awareness among the community even though this workshop is free
  • Lack of promotion. Short period of promotion and wrong medium of promotion
  • Wrongly day choose for this programme, should be in school holiday not on weekends

I really impressed when they bring us to the Bukit Kiara's recreational park in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), in the middle of the crowded area, there was a source of Sg. Penchala where we can found crystal clear potable water.

During this program, they also appointed community as a ‘river ranger’ and they have given “water quality testing kit”.

You can find enclosed the picture of the in situ test has been done during our workshop. I can say that this is valuable experience and GEC did organized one of the excellent workshop. For those who want join as volunteer members of this NGO, please find out at http://www.gecnet.info/www.gec .

Trust me, you will having fun and precious experience.
